In this blog of “The Hindu Vocabulary December 2020”, we have come up with a list of difficult words taken from the Hindu Editorials, their meanings, synonyms, antonyms, examples (the correct usage of the words).

1. CONSCIENTIOUS (ADJECTIVE)
Meaning– Wishing to do one’s work or duty well and thoroughly. (ईमानदार)
Synonyms: Diligent, Punctilious, Assiduous, Industrious
Antonyms– Careless, Heedless, Thoughtless
Example– He is observant and conscientious and pays meticulous attention to details.
2. NUGATORY (ADJECTIVE)
Meaning– Of no value or importance. (तुच्छ)
Synonyms: Worthless, Inconsequential, Insignificant
Antonyms– Significant, Momentous, Meaningful
Example– First of all, the sums involved in the new savings accounts are nugatory.
3. SUBSTANTIALLY (ADVERB)
Meaning– Considerably, Significantly, Greatly. (काफी हद तक)
Antonyms– Hardly, Marginally
Example– We would like to think that we can grow the business substantially.
4. TOUT (VERB)
Meaning– Attempt to persuade people of the merits of. (प्रचारित करना)
Synonyms– Commend, Endorse, Support, Talk of
Antonyms– Condemn, Criticise, Reprove, Reprobate
Example– She was touted as a potential Prime Minister.
5. FAUX (ADJECTIVE)
Meaning– Made in imitation. (नकली)
Synonyms: Artificial, Imagined, Unreal
Antonyms– Natural, Real, Genuine
Example– His accent was so faux.
6. SUPERFLUOUS (ADJECTIVE)
Meaning– Unnecessary, especially throw being more than enough. (अनावश्यक अतिरिक्त)
Synonyms: Unneeded, Inessential, Pointless
Antonyms– Necessary, Essential
Example– The purchaser should avoid asking for superfluous information.
7. COMMISERATE (VERB)
Meaning– Express or feel sympathy or pity (हमदर्दी रखना)
Synonyms: Sympathize, Grieve For, Feel Pity For,
Antonyms– Discourage, Dishearten, Depress
Example– She commiserated with the losers on their defeat.
8. PERCHANC (ADJECTIVE)
Meaning– Perhaps (मुमकिन है)
Synonyms: May Be, Possibly, Mayhap, By Chance
Antonyms– Definitely, Surely, Certainly, Absolutely
Example– If we were more self-confident, perchance we would feel better about ourselves.
9. POIGNANTLY (ADJECTIVE)
Meaning– In a way that has a strong effect on your feelings, especially when it makes you feel sad (तीखेपन से)
Synonyms: Touchingly, Affectingly, Movingly
Antonyms– Unemotionally, Heartlessly, Indifferently
Example– Their experiences of war are poignantly described.
10. ANOMALY (NOUN)
Meaning– A thing, situation, etc. that is different from what is normal or expected. (अनियमितता)
Synonyms: Abnormality, Irregularity, Oddity
Antonyms– Standard, Normality, Regularity
Example– There are a number of anomalies in the present system.
